He was only 71 — still serving in the Senate, still running for reelection, still deeply engaged in the foreign policy fights that mattered most to him. He had just returned from his tenth trip to Ukraine. There had been no public sense that the end was near.

On This Date in 1814…
BORN ON THIS DAY: SAMUEL COLT
On July 19, 1814, Samuel Colt was born in Hartford, Connecticut. His name would eventually become one of the most recognizable in American firearms history.
Colt did not invent the revolver, but he transformed the concept into a practical, commercially successful weapon. In 1836, at just 21 years old, he received a U.S. patent for his revolving-cylinder firearm design. His innovation allowed a shooter to fire multiple rounds before reloading—a major technological advance at the time.
His first firearms business struggled and eventually failed, but Colt staged a remarkable comeback. Demand generated by the Mexican-American War helped revive his designs, and he later built a massive manufacturing operation in Hartford.
Colt was also an important figure in America’s Industrial Revolution. His factories pioneered the use of interchangeable parts and advanced manufacturing techniques that helped make mass production more efficient.
By the time Colt died in 1862, at just 47, he had built an industrial empire and permanently changed firearms manufacturing.
More than 200 years after his birth, the Colt name remains famous. His often-quoted slogan—”God created men; Col. Colt made them equal”—was likely not coined by Colt himself, but it captures the mythology that grew around his invention and his place in American history.
