Tonight’s gubernatorial debate may be the first real chance for this race to break out of its sleepy, unsettled pattern. In the video above, I walk through what each major candidate needs to do to have a successful night, where the pressure points are, and which campaigns have the most at stake. If you are watching the debate, this will tell you what to look for. If you are too busy to watch, this will give you the broad outline of why it matters.

The race still feels oddly flat, with no candidate yet fully breaking through.
Several candidates come into tonight needing very different things: some need to look steady, some need to break out, and some simply need to prove they belong on the stage.
The two Republicans face different tests, while the Democrats are under pressure to distance themselves from one another and from Gavin Newsom’s record.
Matt Mahan remains the most interesting wild card because he is trying to run in a different lane without fully leaving the state's dominant political framework.
For some lower-visibility candidates, not even making the stage may be as telling as anything that happens during the debate itself.
