Are “Candidates of Color” Being Excluded From Upcoming USC/ABC7/Univision Governor’s Debate?

Four candidates left off the stage say the selection criteria were biased. We walk through the polling, fundraising and political accusations behind the controversy.

Jon Fleischman examines the growing controversy surrounding the upcoming California gubernatorial debate hosted by USC and broadcast by ABC7 Los Angeles and Univision. The debate organizers limited participation to six candidates using a formula based on polling and fundraising, but the outcome immediately triggered accusations of bias after several candidates of color were excluded from the stage.

In this video, Jon reviews the Public Policy Institute of California poll used in the criteria and explains how the numbers stack up across the field of candidates. He also examines the fundraising thresholds that may have elevated some campaigns while leaving others outside the debate lineup.

Jon also walks through the sharp criticism from candidates like Xavier Becerra and Antonio Villaraigosa, who argue the process unfairly excluded them, and compares the situation to a similar moment in the 2016 presidential primary when a crowded Republican field forced debate organizers to divide candidates into two tiers.

The result is a political controversy that is now overshadowing the debate itself — and Jon explains why the dispute may not be resolved before the candidates take the stage.
