When Voters Send Conflicting Signals

I have a new column up at the California Post that highlights a scenario that should raise serious questions about where California is headed.

A new statewide survey suggests voters could be on track to approve a sweeping tax on billionaires — while at the same time rejecting a basic voter ID requirement.

On its face, that combination doesn’t add up. But when you dig into the numbers, the coalition splits, and the timing of the polling, a more complicated — and more revealing — picture emerges.

In the column, I walk through what the data actually show, why early polling on ballot measures can be misleading, and how both issues are likely to shift once real campaigns begin.

There’s also a bigger takeaway here about one-party rule in California, and what happens when the ballot box becomes the only remaining check on policy — but voters send mixed signals instead of a clear direction.

And at the end, I connect it to a separate internal Democratic survey that suggests something even more politically disruptive could be on the horizon.
