There Will Be "One Big Beautiful Bill"
Let's not confuse posturing, a natural part of the negotiating process, with a lack of ultimate unity among Republicans on Capitol Hill.
No one is jumping off of the cliff.
Republicans in the Senate and Congress have no choice but to pass the “one big beautiful bill,” as President Trump has called it. If Republicans fail to extend the tax cuts passed and signed into law during Trump’s first term, the political reckoning will be harsh to avoid. It would almost certainly usher in a Democratic majority in the House and boost Democratic gains in the Senate.
So, what about all these various Republican factions' drawing lines in the sand” on multiple issues? One group of Republicans says that without a significant increase in the deductibility of state and local taxes (SALT), they won’t vote for the final bill. Another group says that if there are substantial cuts in Medicaid funding, they won’t support it. A whole host of Members from the House Freedom Caucus have said they will not support the final bill if it increases the federal deficit (and, by extension, the debt).
This is how the game is played. Everyone is posturing for negotiations. But at some point, a final “one big beautiful bill” will come to the floor for a vote, and at that point, Republicans will come together and vote for it. Whether the House Speaker and Senate Majority leader bring it forward this month or in December, it will be this year. They have no choice. The alternative is the equivalent of jumping off a political cliff.
