From Stage to Service: A Career Rooted in Empathy
Gary Sinise's path from acclaimed actor to veteran advocate began long before his Hollywood fame. After co-founding Steppenwolf Theatre in 1976 and his breakout stage work, his role as Lt. Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump marked a turning point—not just for his career, but for his life's mission. Deeply moved by the wounded Vietnam veteran he portrayed, he realized that acting could spark real-world action. Of course, many remember him best for the nine seasons he starred on CSI: NY.
Building Real Homes for Real Heroes
In 2011, Sinise launched the Gary Sinise Foundation with a clear mission: honor our defenders. The foundation has raised hundreds of millions to build specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded veterans, giving them freedom to rebuild their lives. It has served over a million meals and hosted nearly 500 support concerts. It is nearing its 100th home, a milestone reflecting its enduring impact.
From the Lt. Dan Band to Free Movie Nights
Sinise's service extends beyond construction. In 2004, he formed the Lt. Dan Band to bring music and morale to troops worldwide, filling bases with joyful chords for active-duty personnel and veterans through hundreds of performances. (garysinisefoundation.org)
More recently, as executive producer of Brothers After War, Sinise secured a record-breaking $150,000 donation to Vet Tix, enabling veterans and first responders to attend free screenings. He also organized national screenings with workshops to foster civilian-military understanding.
Also a Republican—Just Not Loud About It
While Sinise's patriotic outreach defines him, his political leanings are part of his story—subtly expressed, never trumpeted. In 2004, he founded Friends of Abe, a private Hollywood group fostering fellowship among conservative artists. I met Sinise once at a Friends of Abe meeting, brought by my dear friend Andrew Breitbart—the Happy Warrior and a past Patriot Profile honoree. That night, Sinise, with his warm, steady presence, united a room of Hollywood's "quiet conservatives," proving that believers in freedom and liberty thrive in the entertainment industry.
In October 2021, Sinise spoke via video at the California Federation of Republican Women's Biennial Convention, sharing his passion for veterans and conservative values. In a 2023 interview, he described himself as "one of Hollywood's few conservatives," noting the professional risks while expressing pride in uniting like-minded artists.
So, Does It Matter?
Gary Sinise's career began under the spotlight, but his legacy lies in homes built, meals served, and communities strengthened—not box office receipts or political posturing. His work embodies a timeless principle: patriotism is often quiet, not loud; service is often local, not headline-grabbing.
That night at Friends of Abe, I saw the same qualities that define his veteran advocacy—steadiness, humility, and conviction. Sinise shows that leadership isn't about self-promotion; it's about uniting others, inspiring courage, and pointing them toward a greater purpose. By supporting veterans with heart and action, he calls us all—regardless of politics—to follow his lead and make a slight difference today. And that truly matters.
The Sinise Foundation does so many amazing things. Here is Gary on a flight with over 1000 Gold Star Children traveling with surviving parent or guardian, 1,722 in all - the Foundation flew everyone to Disneyland!
