An Announcement Is Not Proof, But It Is Also Not Nothing
Let’s start with the obvious point: Eric Swalwell has not been publicly accused on the record by a named woman in the story now circulating, and no public lawsuit, police report, or formal complaint has surfaced in the reporting.
At least not yet.
But Democratic activist and head of the progressive organization Gen-Z for Change, Cheyenne Hunt, has publicly said she is working with multiple women who are preparing to come forward with allegations against Swalwell. She has said they include women from different parts of his orbit, that they are taking legal precautions, and that they are communicating with reporters.
This does not prove the allegations are true. But it also means this isn’t just an anonymous rumor started by someone with nothing at stake. In a governor’s race where momentum matters, even the hint of scandal can cause real harm.
Why Cheyenne Hunt’s Role Is Important
A common mistake in politics is treating every allegation as if it’s equally important. That’s not the case. Who makes the claim matters.
Cheyenne Hunt is not a random troll looking for clicks. She is a Democratic activist, an attorney, and the head of a legitimate progressive group. More importantly, she is coming at this from inside the left, not from the usual partisan opposition lane. That does not make her right. But it’s worth noting as we wait to see what happens next.
If Hunt were only hinting at a scandal, it would be easier to ignore. But she’s making a clear public claim: several women are preparing to come forward, they’re taking precautions, and the issue is moving toward public attention. That’s a serious claim. If it isn’t backed up, it could hurt her reputation. She understands that. That’s why Swalwell can’t just brush this off.
Hunt’s Post on X…
Why This Is Politically Dangerous For Swalwell
This is important because Eric Swalwell is a leading Democrat in the governor’s race, polling about even with Tom Steyer and Katie Porter, and has built strong support. He’s also secured major labor endorsements, including from the California Teachers Association and SEIU California.
That completely changes what’s at stake.
When allegations surface about a fringe candidate, most people in politics don’t pay much attention. But when they involve a Democrat with a real shot at becoming governor and strong union support, everyone takes notice. Donors start asking questions, reporters dig deeper, endorsers weigh the risks, and rivals look for an opening.
And Swalwell’s political case is especially vulnerable here because so much of it rests on viability. He is running as someone the Democratic establishment and organized labor can rally behind. A campaign built that way can survive ideological attacks. What it does not survive easily is an expanding cloud of character questions.
So, Does It Matter?
This is a situation worth watching closely. Not because guilt has been proven. It has not. Not because formal charges appear imminent. There is no basis to say that right now. And not because every ugly political rumor deserves oxygen. Most do not.
It matters because this situation has reached a new level. A well-known Democratic activist is publicly saying that several women are preparing to accuse a sitting Congressman and candidate for governor of harassment. Hunt says precautions are being taken, reporters are being contacted, and, according to her, Swalwell’s team knows what’s coming.
Of course, any kind of scandal, even one with credible accusations (that could not be quickly disproven), could have a massive impact in the current horse race for a birth in the top two runoff, with ballots dropping in like a month.
Oh yeah, in the last day the prediction market has dropped for Swalwell.
As they say in the news business, this story is... developing.
