Issue Tool Box: Ten Reasons Why 100% Renewables Are a Dangerous Fantasy
From hidden subsidies to grid instability, the dream of running America on wind and solar collapses under facts, not slogans.

The Case Against the 100% Renewables Promise
Activists and politicians often claim we can build an energy future powered entirely by solar and wind. The promise sounds appealing: endless clean energy, lower costs, and a greener planet. But slogans don’t power a modern grid. A deeper look reveals the cracks in the “100% renewables” promise—it looks less like science and more like ideology. Here are ten reasons why.
“Free energy” isn’t free.
We are told that sunlight and wind are limitless and cost nothing, but power systems don’t run on slogans. Solar panels and wind turbines only work under the right conditions—and neither guarantees round-the-clock supply. Expensive backup plants or storage must always be ready. Once those costs are included, the idea of “free” power evaporates.
Reliability can’t be sacrificed.
Electricity is unique: supply and demand must match every second. Unlike coal, gas, or nuclear, renewables can swing from full capacity to near zero in minutes. That instability makes energy more fragile and more costly.
The hidden costs are enormous.
Renewables advocates cite low “levelized cost of energy” numbers. But those figures usually ignore the expense of storage, transmission, or backup systems. It’s like pricing a car without including fuel or maintenance. Once the full costs are counted, renewables are not nearly as competitive as their boosters suggest.
Subsidies keep the industry afloat.
If wind and solar truly beat fossil fuels on price, they wouldn’t need billions in taxpayer aid. Yet they remain heavily dependent on tax credits, grants, and mandates. Government favoritism doesn’t prove success—it signals weakness.
