Gavin Newsom’s 2028 Problem Starts Before Super Tuesday
My latest California Post column looks at the Democrats’ newly reshuffled 2028 presidential primary calendar — and why the first six states could make Gavin Newsom’s California record a lot harder to sell nationally.
The Democratic National Committee has now laid out the opening stretch of the 2028 presidential contest.
South Carolina. Nevada. New Hampshire. New Mexico. Michigan. Virginia.
Only after that does the race broaden dramatically on Super Tuesday.
For Gavin Newsom, those first six stops could be a problem.
Newsom has spent years building a national profile around California — its policies, its progressive priorities, and his willingness to aggressively defend both. But running for president means taking that record outside California and putting it in front of Democratic electorates with very different economies, industries and political cultures.
And the timing may be especially awkward.
Newsom is no longer dominating the Democratic conversation the way he once did. The field is taking shape, other prominent Democrats are drawing support, and simply attacking Donald Trump no longer makes Newsom unique.
In my full California Post column, I walk through the new primary calendar state by state and look at the particular pieces of Newsom’s California record that could follow him onto the campaign trail.
Some involve energy. Some involve cars. Some involve cultural issues. Others involve industries that are enormously important to the states where Democratic voters will be casting the first ballots of 2028.
The larger question is whether the California record Newsom has spent years turning into a national résumé instead becomes something his opponents can use against him.
And he has six states to get through before Super Tuesday even arrives.
