When I watched this video, I got mad. People simply do not understand the bait-and-switch going on here…
While this is billed as a tax on just billionaires, it is largely a ruse. The fine print of the ballot measure clearly allows politicians in Sacramento to expand this ability to literally take the assets of any Californian without ever having to go back to voters for permission.
You know how this will go. No one is more able to pick up and leave this state than the super-wealthy, who will leave the state, taking their assets with them. And if they own companies, large and small — those will ultimately leave the state as well. With them gone, they will look for more money, and we will be next.
I caught up with Jon Slavet, the host of State of Gold, which has produced dozens of great interview videos (see them all here — although I am particularly partial to this one), and asked him about this project in particular…
“We launched the State of Gold Podcast to engage people across the political spectrum with the best ideas to revive the California dream,” Slavet told me. “After the Prop 50 fiasco, we knew it was more important than ever to go direct to our audience when something threatens our collective well-being. The proposed ‘Billionaire Tax’ is just such an issue, so we’re exposing the hidden agenda driving Sacramento politicians and the existential risk to California’s future.”
