Afternoon Hot Takes In California Politics

As the occasion merits, when I get too many items stacking up that I want to write about, I publish a “Hot Takes” column.

Today’s column has hot takes on:

  • Legislative Republicans file another lawsuit with the California Supremes

  • Former Congresswoman Michelle Steel blasts new proposed House lines

  • Senator Alvarado-Gil draws a credible Republican challenger…

  • The voracious appetite of California Dems… They’ve introduced how much in new taxes?

  • A massive tax should be abolished, not used to fund the High Speed Rail debacle.

  • There is no clear front-runner for California Governor, and now Senator Padilla may want to jump in?

Legislative Republicans File Another Lawsuit with the California Supreme Court

A writ was filed on behalf of petitioners including Assemblywoman Kathryn Sanchez, Assemblyman Tri Ta, Senators Suzette Valladares and Tony Strickland, among others, urging the California Supreme Court to halt the November 4th special election on redistricting ballot initiative Prop 50, arguing it’s unconstitutional.

Key violations include breaching the single-subject rule by merging unrelated issues: urging a U.S. Constitutional Amendment for nationwide nonpartisan redistricting while overriding California’s citizen commission maps. The legislature also lacked authority to draw maps, failed to ensure contiguous districts or preserved communities of interest, disregarded transparent processes, potentially considered partisan factors, defied the one-redistricting-per-decade rule, and used improper “gut and amend” tactics without the 30-day waiting period. Voter approval cannot legitimize these acts.

I think on the merits this case is solid. The political question is whether this partisan court, with six appointees of Gavin Newsom and Jerry Brown dominating, will actually consider the merits. Or just reject it as they “play ball” as liberal activists on the court. We shall see!

Former U.S. Representative Michelle Steel makes her case against Prop. 50.

Look for a lot more of this kind of local social media advocacy (on both sides, actually)… And speaking of California Republicans in Congress, here is a longer interview that Congressman Tom McClintock did on cable news that goes into the redistricting debacle and more…
