Dems Want To Tax Bay Area Residents For BART, Whether They Ride Or Not

Supporters recently announced they had collected enough signatures to place a regional transit tax on the ballot this November.

But the signatures were never the real challenge.

The bigger story is how Sacramento Democrats created a regional taxing structure that treats millions of voters across five Bay Area counties as one giant voting bloc — and why transit agencies now find themselves seeking a multibillion-dollar taxpayer bailout.

This debate is often framed as a matter of saving public transportation.

But it is also about accountability.

Ridership collapsed. Revenue followed. Yet many of the underlying problems that pushed riders away remain unresolved.

Now taxpayers are being asked to provide billions more.

Before voters are told they must rescue Bay Area transit, shouldn’t they know what reforms will accompany the bailout?

In my latest California Post column, I examine the politics behind the proposal, the financial reality facing BART and other transit agencies, and why taxpayers deserve answers before being handed another bill.
